In a remarkable stride towards social empowerment, the Centre for Women Welfare and Social Empowerment (CWSE) at NIT Calicut, in collaboration with the Coir Board, Ministry of MSME, Govt. of India, and the Centre for Continuing Education and Skill Development (CCESD) have initiated a transformative two-month Value-Added Products (VAP) manufacturing training programme.

This initiative aims to equip twenty Kudumbhashree women with essential skills in manufacturing value-added products, thereby enhancing their economic independence and social standing. The programme will run from August 6, 2024, to October 5, 2024, at the CWSE Office, NITC Central Library. The Coir Board, Govt. of India is providing a stipend to each participant and will award certificates upon successful completion of the training.

The inauguration for this event was held on August 6, 2024, at 2:00 pm at the CWSE office. Dr. Jayasree T.K., the programme coordinator, set the tone of the event with a warm welcome address, followed by the symbolic lighting of the lamp and the formal inauguration of the training programme by programme committee. Dr. S. Bhuvaneshwari, Chairperson of CWSE, passionately highlighted the centre's ongoing efforts and achievements in empowering women. Dr. Sajith, Chairperson of CCESD, provided insights into their significant contributions to various skill development programmes. Ms. Indu .D.I,Accounts Manager,Coir Board, Govt.of India, Sub regional office.Kannur spoke about the crucial role of such initiatives in uplifting women from grassroots levels. The event concluded with a heartfelt vote of thanks by Dr. Shraddha Bahirat, the programme co-coordinator.

This training programme is more than just a learning opportunity; it is a beacon of hope and a step towards a brighter, empowered future for the Kudumbhashree women. Initiatives like these will not only impart skills but also instill confidence and self-worth in the participants, paving a way for sustainable development and social change.

The Centre for Women Welfare and Social Empowerment (CWSE) marked a significant milestone with the Inauguration of Unnati - The Student Chapter of CWSE. The chapter, inaugurated by the Prof. Prasad Krishna, Hon. On the occasion of International Women in Engineering Day, observed on 23 June, members of the Centre for Women Welfare and Social Empowerment (CWSE) came together to celebrate the journeys, voices, and achievements of women in engineering.
The gathering provided a reflective and inspiring platform where participants shared their personal stories on why they chose engineering, the challenges they encountered, and the motivations that shaped their paths. These narratives highlighted resilience, curiosity, and the transformative power of education, while also encouraging young women to pursue and persist in engineering and technical fields.
The event fostered a sense of solidarity and mentorship, reinforcing the importance of representation, shared experiences, and supportive academic spaces in advancing women’s participation and leadership in engineering.

The Centre for Women Welfare and Social Empowerment (CWSE), in association with IEEE Power and Energy Society Student Branch Chapter, NIT Calicut, organized an Online Art Contest: Sketch the Spark - "Where does her power come from?" on the occasion of International Women in Engineering Day 2025, inviting students to express their creativity and perspectives on women's strength and empowerment. The contest showcased powerful artworks that reflected imagination, talent, and meaningful interpretations of women's resilience.

Under the theme “Strength and Wellness for Every Girl,” the Centre for Women Welfare and Social Empowerment (CWSE), in collaboration with the Global Hunt Foundation and the United Taekwondo Association, organized a Self-Defense and Menstrual Health Workshop for young girls of the Spring Valley School.

The program focused on empowering participants with essential self-defense techniques while simultaneously creating awareness about menstrual hygiene, health, and well-being. Through interactive sessions and practical demonstrations, the initiative aimed to build confidence, promote physical safety, and encourage informed conversations around menstrual health.

The workshop reflected CWSE’s commitment to holistic empowerment by addressing both personal safety and health education, fostering resilience and self-confidence among young girls.

"The Centre for Women Welfare and Social Empowerment (CWSE) in collaboration with Centre for Student Activities and Sports (CSAS) and Centre for Yoga and Holistic Wellness (CYHW) celebrated Nutrition Week 2025 from 1–7 September 2025 with a series of engaging activities aimed at promoting healthy eating habits and overall well-being among the NIT Calicut community.
Organized around the theme “Eat Right for a Better Life,” the week featured a range of interactive initiatives, including a Digital Photography Contest encouraging creative representation of nutrition, an expert talk on nutrition delivered by a speaker from Edhini, and an exhibition showcasing nutritious food choices such as millets, oil-free dishes, and mushroom-based meals. In addition, daily nutrition tips were shared throughout the week to motivate participants to adopt healthier lifestyle practices.
The event witnessed active participation from students, faculty, and staff, fostering awareness about balanced diets, informed food choices, and the importance of nutrition in sustaining long-term health. Nutrition Week 2025 reflected CWSE’s continued commitment to holistic well-being, health awareness, and community engagement."

The Centre for Women Welfare and Social Empowerment (CWSE), through its Students Chapter – UNNATI, successfully conducted a 12-Week Hybrid Lecture Series on “Empowering Students Through Social and Self Awareness” from 31 July 2025 to 13 November 2025 at the National Institute of Technology Calicut.

The lecture series was conceptualized to provide students with a holistic understanding of personal well-being, social responsibility, gender sensitivity, mental health, physical safety, and self-empowerment. Designed in a hybrid mode, the programme enabled wider participation and facilitated interaction with experts from diverse professional and academic backgrounds.

Over the course of twelve weeks, the series featured interactive lectures, expert talks, workshops, and awareness sessions addressing themes such as mental and emotional well-being, menstrual health and hygiene, nutrition, self-defense, gender equity, resilience, social awareness, and sustainable health practices. The sessions encouraged open dialogue, critical thinking, and self-reflection, enabling students to connect academic learning with real-life social contexts.

The programme witnessed active participation from NIT Calicut students and invited school students, fostering inclusivity and community engagement. Feedback from participants highlighted increased awareness, confidence, and motivation to adopt healthier, more socially responsible practices.

The successful completion of the 12-week lecture series stands as a testament to CWSE and UNNATI’s commitment to student empowerment, holistic education, and social well-being. The initiative contributed meaningfully to creating a supportive academic environment that nurtures informed, resilient, and socially conscious individuals.

The CWSE Students Chapter – UNNATI organized a Quiz on Women in the Freedom Movement on 4 November 2025, aimed at creating awareness about the often-unsung contributions of women in India’s struggle for independence.
The quiz provided an engaging platform for students to reflect on the courage, leadership, and sacrifices of women freedom fighters who played a pivotal role in shaping the nation’s history. Conducted in a team format, the event encouraged participation, discussion, and learning in an interactive and time-bound setting.
Through this initiative, UNNATI sought to celebrate women’s historical contributions, foster historical consciousness among students, and reinforce the importance of recognizing women’s voices in national narratives. The event was well received and witnessed enthusiastic participation from students across disciplines.

The Centre for Women Welfare and Social Empowerment (CWSE) was honored to host Dr. Ravinder Kaur, IIT Delhi, who visited the centre and provided valuable guidance along with insightful suggestions. Dr. Ravinder Kaur is a Professor of Sociology and Social Anthropology in the Department of Humanities and Social Sciences at IIT Delhi. She is widely recognized for her contributions to the study of contemporary social transformations, cultural practices, and institutional dynamics. Her work offers critical insights into issues of gender, society, and governance, making her engagement highly relevant to the initiatives of CWSE.

The National Institute of Technology Calicut (NITC) has been conferred the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) Award for Excellence in Women in STEM 2025, marking its second consecutive year of receiving this prestigious national recognition. The award reaffirms NITC’s sustained commitment to fostering gender equity and promoting the participation and leadership of women in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM).
The award was presented at a formal ceremony held in New Delhi on 17 December 2025, in the presence of eminent leaders from industry, academia, and policy-making bodies. This recognition highlights NIT Calicut’s proactive initiatives and institutional best practices aimed at creating an inclusive academic and research ecosystem.
NIT Calicut has consistently demonstrated strong outcomes in encouraging women’s participation in STEM education and research, promoting women leadership in academia, and implementing policies that support diversity and inclusion. The institute’s initiatives and best practices in empowering women have also been featured in the CII Coffee Table Book on Organizations Empowering Women in STEM, showcasing NITC as a leading national example in this domain.
This achievement underscores NIT Calicut’s role as a forward-looking institution committed to excellence, inclusivity, and the advancement of women in STEM fields.

The Centre for Women Welfare and Social Empowerment (CWSE), in association with the Department of Management Studies (DMS), successfully conducted the Women Leadership Programme on 4–5 December 2025 at NIT Calicut.
This two-day programme served as a dynamic and interactive platform aimed at empowering aspiring women leaders through knowledge sharing, mentorship, and meaningful engagement with experts from diverse professional backgrounds. A series of keynote talks, panel discussions, and experiential learning activities enabled participants to broaden their leadership outlook and gain valuable insights.
A major highlight of the event was the presence of distinguished guests, including Dr. Prasad Krishna, Hon’ble Director, NIT Calicut, and Dr. Vijayalakshmi Deshmane, Chairperson, BoG, IIIT Kottayam and renowned Surgical Oncologist (Padma Shri Awardee 2025). Their inspiring addresses added exceptional value to the programme, making it a memorable initiative dedicated to women’s empowerment and leadership development.
The programme received an enthusiastic response with around seventy young female faculty members, staff, and research scholars taking part. Their active participation contributed to vibrant discussions, collaborative learning, and an enriching overall experience."

The Centre for Women Welfare and Social Empowerment (CWSE), NIT Calicut, organized a series of initiatives from 25th November to 10th December 2025 as part of the global Annual Activism for Ending Gender-Based Violence. These programs focused on awareness, prevention, and empowerment, aiming to create a safe and inclusive campus environment while promoting collective responsibility against gender-based violence (GBV).

Event 3: Expert Talk on the POSH Act
Dr. Divya from Gender Park, Department of Women and Child Development, Kozhikode, delivered an expert talk on Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace (POSH) Act, 2013 on 4th December 2025. Around 70 faculty members, staff, and research scholars attended the session, gaining insights into workplace safety, legal protections, and redressal mechanisms under the POSH Act.
Event 4: One-Day Workshop on Crime Against Women & Gender Sensitization
On 9th December 2025, Ms. Rekha Prasad, Advocate, Thrissur District Court, conducted a workshop on crime against women and gender sensitization. The session included interactive discussions and sensitization activities, reaching approximately 100 participants, including non-teaching staff and sanitation helpers, to ensure inclusive legal awareness on GBV.
These initiatives collectively strengthened the understanding of GBV, empowered participants with knowledge on legal frameworks, and reinforced the importance of creating a safe and supportive campus environment.

As part of Breast Cancer Awareness Month 2025, the Centre for Women Welfare and Social Empowerment (CWSE), in collaboration with the Centre for Yoga and Holistic Wellness, Department of Bioscience and Engineering, National Institute of Technology Calicut, organized a series of awareness and outreach activities aimed at promoting early detection, prevention, and informed dialogue on breast cancer.
The programme included a video presentation on breast cancer risk assessment, an exhibition, and poster presentations, encouraging students to engage creatively and critically with issues related to breast cancer awareness and advocacy. A Poster Making Contest was also conducted, providing a platform for students to express their perspectives on breast cancer prevention, awareness, and the fight against the disease through visual communication.
Held on 16 October 2025 at the Seminar Hall, BSED, the event witnessed active participation from students and faculty across disciplines. The initiative sought to foster awareness, dispel myths, and emphasize the importance of regular screening, early diagnosis, and collective responsibility in addressing breast cancer.
The event was coordinated by Dr. Suresh P.S., Associate Professor, BSED, and contributed meaningfully to CWSE’s ongoing efforts toward health awareness, women’s well-being, and social empowerment.

"The Centre for Women Welfare and Social Empowerment (CWSE), in collaboration with the Department of Education, National Institute of Technology Calicut, successfully organized the International Conference on Resilience and Rights (ICRAR 2025) on 20–21 November 2025.
The conference, themed “Women’s Pathways to Empowerment in Comparative Perspective,” brought together scholars, researchers, and practitioners to engage in critical discussions on women’s rights, resilience, and social justice. The event was inaugurated under the patronage of Prof. Prasad Krishna, Director, NIT Calicut, with Dr. Ravi Varma M.K., Dean (International, Alumni and Corporate Relations), extending institutional support.
The conference featured an enlightening keynote address by Dr. Jane Prasad, Registrar, IIT Madras, along with invited talks by distinguished speakers including Dr. Shalini Singh, Dr. Rosanna Barros, Dr. Filipa Contente, Adv. Dibyanshu Pandey, Dr. Soren Ehlers, Dr. Jacob George, and Prof. Meena T. Pillai. Their diverse perspectives enriched deliberations on themes such as gender justice, mental health and well-being, education, family and legal frameworks, and cultural negotiations of women’s rights.
ICRAR 2025 provided a vibrant interdisciplinary platform for dialogue, knowledge exchange, and collaboration, reinforcing CWSE’s commitment to advancing women’s empowerment, equity, and inclusive social development.""

As part of the 12-Week Hybrid Lecture Series, the CWSE Students Chapter – UNNATI organized a Menstrual Health Awareness Programme and Menstrual Cup Distribution for NIT Calicut and school students on 9 October 2025 at Bhaskara Hall, NIT Calicut.
The programme was conducted in collaboration with Aster Volunteers, Aster MIMS, and Amora Healthtech, and focused on promoting awareness, education, and sustainable menstrual health practices. Expert sessions addressed key aspects of menstrual hygiene, reproductive health, and safe menstrual product usage, while also encouraging open and informed discussions to dispel myths and stigma surrounding menstruation.
The event featured talks by Ms. Shaniba Palliyal, Founder and Managing Director, Amora Healthtech; Mr. Charles V. K., Co-Founder, Amora Healthtech; and Dr. Najah Abdul Rehman, Consultant – Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Aster MIMS Calicut. The session concluded with the distribution of menstrual cups, reinforcing the importance of sustainable and accessible menstrual health solutions.
The initiative reflected CWSE and UNNATI’s continued commitment to menstrual health awareness, dignity, and empowerment among young girls and students.

The Centre for Women Welfare and Social Empowerment (CWSE), in collaboration with the Internal Complaints Committee (ICC), organised a two-day awareness program on the Prevention of Sexual Harassment at Workplace on 22-23 September 2025 at Bhaskara Hall, NIT Calicut. The program was designed to sensitise the student community, with sessions tailored separately for undergraduate and postgraduate students, recognising that each group may encounter challenges in different contexts.The program was coordinated by Dr. Geethika Sebastian (MAT) and Dr. Susmita Das (CHED).

Day 1 (22 September 2025, 3pm) featured a session for undergraduate students led by Advocate Sarath K. P., practising advocate at the High Court of Kerala and a certified PoSH trainer. He spoke on "Making the Campus Safe and Comfortable for All Students and Employees", drawing on his extensive experience in conducting awareness programs on PoSH, POCSO, and related laws. Empanelled as a trainer and External Member with SolPoSH Consultants, he has delivered impactful sessions across diverse organisations, combining legal expertise with practical, relatable insights.

Day 2 (23 September 2025, 10 am) began with an inauguration ceremony presided over by Prof. Prasad Krishna, Director, NIT Calicut. In his inaugural address, he emphasised the importance of being aware of the law, institutional provisions, and the rights that safeguard students and employees from sexual harassment. He also highlighted the crucial role of the Internal Complaints Committee (ICC), reminding students that the ICC is a powerful and ready mechanism to support them whenever needed. The inauguration was also presided over by Dr.Shiny Joseph (Presiding Officer, ICC), Dr. S. Bhuvaneshwari (Chairperson, CWSE), and Dr. Ilanila (Vice Chairperson, CWSE).

Following the inauguration, Advocate Sarath K. P. addressed postgraduate and Ph.D. students, focusing on the conceptual and procedural dimensions of sexual harassment, including the role of the ICC under the UGC framework. This was followed by a lecture by Advocate Rekha Prasad, an accomplished legal professional based in Thrissur with nearly three decades of practice. With her expertise in gender sensitivity, counselling, and women's rights, she offered a holistic perspective on "Gender Sensitivity and Crime Against Women.".

As part of the program, a Poster Competition was organised on the theme of preventing sexual harassment and building safe campus spaces. The posters were displayed in the ABC lobby. The Director viewed the entries and presented the prizes to the winners:

Following the sessions, quiz based on the sessions was also held on Day Two of the program (23 September 2025) to encourage interaction and reflection. The following students were the prize winners based on their scores in the quiz:

All the winners were presented with the prizes/certificates. The program provided a strong platform for awareness and dialogue, reaffirming NIT Calicut's commitment to fostering a safe environment and working towards a culture of zero tolerance for sexual harassment at the workplace.

The celebrations for International Women's Day at the NIT Calicut were organised by the Centre for Women Welfare and Social Empowerment (CWSE) during the second week of March 2023. The festivities began on March 7th evening with a Campus Walkathon that was officially kicked off by the Director, Prof. Dr. Prasad Krishna, and the Deputy Director, Prof. P. S. Sathidevi. On March 8, International Women's Day, the research festival Constellate '23, with the topic "Women in STEAM," was co-organised by CWSE in conjunction with the Research Forum NIT Calicut. As a part of the Women's Day events, several competitions were also held for the student body. A digital poster design competition with the theme "Women in STEAM" and an elocution contest with the topic "My Social Responsibility" were held among the pupils. On March 10th, an official event was organised with participation from eminent women achievers and Dr. Suni Vasudevan, chairperson, CWSE welcomed the dignitaries at the function. Dr. Rajalakshmi Menon, Director, Centre for Airborne Systems, Defence Research and Development Organization formally inaugurated the Centre for Women's Welfare and Social Empowerment at NIT Calicut. In her lecture, Dr. Rajalakshmi Menon emphasised the necessity of female leadership and urged the women community to step forward and accept the challenge. Director Prof. Prasad Krishna presided over the event and emphasised the need of women working together for successful outcomes, including entrepreneurship. In her remarks, Lt. Cdr. Kulbir Kaur, the event's Guest of Honour, made special mention of a number of accomplished women scientists who were instrumental in developing the country's science and technology foundation. Lt. Cdr. Kulbir Kaur also launched the website of Centre for Women Welfare and Social Empowerment at the event. Prof. Dr. Sathidevi P. S., Deputy Director of NIT Calicut, delivered the message on women's day in which she highlighted the importance of societal support for increasing the participation of women in positions of leadership. Registrar Commander (Dr.) Shamasundara M. S., emphasized the need for women's empowerment to begin with each individual's family and Prof. Dr. A. Shaija, Chairperson of the Internal Complaints Committee, urged the women's community to speak out against offensive gestures and to maintain high levels of self-respect at all times. Women employees who have been in service for more than 25 years at NIT Calicut were honoured at the event. Students also held a brief discussion on the subject of "Embracing Equity: Challenges and Experiences". Awards were given out to the winners of various events arranged as part of Women's Day and Dr. Lintu Rajan expressed her appreciation at the conclusion of the programme.

Honourable Minister of State for External Affairs and Parliamentary Affairs, Shri. V. Muraleedharan, visited NIT Calicut on 24th February 2023. The minister launched several new initiatives during the event. Shri PTA Rahim, MLA Kunnamangalam also attended the event. The Director, Prof Prasad Krishna in his presidential address urged on the need for multidisciplinary knowledge and aptitude for engineering students. The Hon. minister Shri V Muraleedharan addressed the gathering and emphasized the need of diversifying education and learning and the global significance of the same. Shri PTA Rahim, MLA Kunnamangalam also addressed the gathering and congratulated the institute for its endeavors.

The Deputy Director of NITC, Prof Sathidevi PS congratulated the Center for International Relations and Foreign Languages and conveyed best wishes to the newly formed Center for Women Welfare and Social Empowerment (CWSE). The Registrar, Cdr. Dr Shamasundara M S, in his welcome address, assured that NITC will continue to commit itself to several other socially committed initiatives. A brochure of the newly formed Centre for Women Welfare and Social Empowerment, CWSE was released by the Minister. The Chair of the center, Dr Suni Vasudevan, mentioned that the objectives of the centre is to empower girls and women towards self–sustenance, by enabling them to take part in decision-making and entrepreneurial skills, and providing equitable socio-economic opportunities.

The National Institute of Technology Calicut is scheduled to host a grand celebration of the International Day of Yoga (IDY2024) on June 21, 2024, in accordance with the guidelines of the government of India.

Centre for Yoga and Holistic Wellness, NITC has arranged a session on Yoga training in Yoga Hall, New Mega Hostel ( Boys) from 8-9 am on 21 June 2024 . There are exciting prizes for advanced yoga performances, including a certificate and a cash award of Rs. 1000 per person.

As preparation for the International Day of Yoga (IDY2024), a three-day free yoga and meditation training session is scheduled from 18 -20 June 2024, in the Conference Hall of the Department of Architecture and Planning. The programme for the first day of celebration (June 18, 2024) was scheduled from 8 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. The yoga training was given by Acharya Unniraman, Director of PYRC, Calicut, while the meditation sessions were led by Dr. Prasad Krishna, Director NIT Calicut.

The Centre for Women Welfare & Social Empowerment hosted a special session for women of all ages on "Empowering Women Through Yoga: Principles to Practice" by Dr. Smitha AV, Professor and Head of PNNM Ayurveda Medical College. The program was attended by about 25 participants, including NITC faculty, staff, students, and family members.

The Center for Women Social Empowerment (CWSE), NIT Calicut in collaboration with Global Hunt Foundation conducted a 'Menstrual Health and Hygiene Management' session for the female students of Spring Valley School on 14.06.2024. The main mission of this programme is to provide an awareness among the female students about maintaining a good menstrual hygiene and managing health properly. The school principal Ms.Shyni A and the CWSE Chairperson, Dr. S. Bhuvaneshwari provided the welcome address, followed by a talk on the biological process of menstruation in virtual mode by Mrs. Nithya, a CSR executive from Unicharm, India. Next to the talk by Mrs. Nithya, Dr. Indumathi Sathisaran from CWSE provided a talk on dos and don'ts during the menstrual period. As a last part of the program, interactive sessions with the students were conducted. The students actively participated in the session. Lastly, Dr. Ilanila, Vice Chairperson from CWSE and a student named Lakshmi. R of X std from Spring Valley ended the session with a vote of thanks
